Pilates Instructor Training FAQ’s

Q: Why choose Balanced Body?

All of Balanced Body educational programs highlight movement principles that are universal to the way the body moves, strengthens and heals. These principles incorporate the most up-to-date biomechanical theories of movement and exercise science. Understanding these principles in relation to the program of study creates a dynamic learning experience which is immediately incorporated into practice.

Q: What are the benefits of becoming a Balanced Body instructor?

A Balanced Body certificate is considered to be the gold standard throughout the mindful movement space and beyond. As a result, our instructors are respected innovators and contributors to the fields of movement science, physical therapy and fitness.

A Balanced Body certificate gives you access to some of the best instructors in the country, the most innovative educational curriculum, and a wealth of on-line support such as educational pod-casts and marketing materials.

Q: What resources are available to the BB instructor?

Balanced Body instructors not only have access to best-in-class educators in the field of mindful movement, but also are supported by our dedicated and experienced infrastructure with over 36 years in the industry. In addition, a Balanced Body instructor has access to continually updated and progressive podcasts which brings educators from all over the world into your living room, studio or fitness center.

Q: How does your Pilates program work?

Our Pilates program is set up in modular segments.

Each segment covers a specific amount of work designed to create an educational arc of learning that is digestible and easily integrated into practice. Modules have a hierarchy and though some can be taken independently of other modules, they are often taught as stepping stones toward completion of your certificate program of choice.

For example, if you want to become a Mat instructor, you would take Movement Principles, Mat I, Mat II, Mat III and an Anatomy module to be eligible to test out. Mat II can not precede Mat I.

Q: Can I take individual modules or do I need to commit to the whole course?

Yes and no. Since our courses are structured in an educational hierarchy, some of our modules have pre-requisite requirements. For example, you must take Reformer I before taking Reformer II. However, our introductory courses, Mat I and Reformer I can be taken as individuals and preparatory courses to the intermediate and advanced work.

Q: What is the difference between Balanced Body and other certificate Pilates programs?

First and foremost Balanced Body acknowledges that many of the top rated instructional programming has value, merit and a level of quality that creates a thriving and diverse instructor population. Though we can not speak to what other programs offer or do not offer, we can speak to what Balanced Body has to offer.

Balanced Body respects the traditions of Joseph H. Pilates’ original works while also incorporating the best of contemporary scientific research from exercise science to full-body movement theories. In doing so, students not only learn the exercises, but strategies how to use the exercises to best meet clients’ individual needs.

In addition, Balanced Body encourages educators coming from diverse backgrounds as the diversity of our team ensures diversity of experience for our students.

Finally, Balanced Body prides itself on providing you with the educational tools from which to teach and grow as a practitioner. We do not dictate “how” you should teach. We encourage each of you to find your voice, your rhythm and your style as practitioners. Our master instructors are your guides and mentors and will help to empower you as you create your place within the Pilates community.

Q: How do I do my personal practice, observation and student teaching hours?

It is perfectly clear to a seasoned instructor when a student shows up to a test out and has not completed the required hours. For this reason, the hours are self-reported and on the honor system. We require 5 hours (Mat & Reformer) & 10 hours (Comprehensive) of the required Personal Pilates practice sessions to be completed at Stomping Ground Studios at the discounted price of $13.50 for Mat classes & $27 for Equipment/Reformer classes, sold in packs of 5.

We also highly recommend that you teach, observe and practice in different environments. This allows you to hear cues, observe hands on technique and employ strategies from a variety of teachers. It also makes you think about what is good teaching and how best to approach it.

Q: Which module should I start with?

Movement Principles is the gateway to the modular system and is the starting place for all of our certificate programs. From there, Mat 1 or Reformer I are the next step.

Q: Do you offer a bridge program?

Yes, Balanced Body offers students who have either completed a certificate program from another education program or who have taken coursework but who have not yet tested out and offers an easy and comprehensive bridge opportunity. Contact us to find out more about the Bridge program.

Q: Do you offer onsite training at other facilities or studios?

Balanced Body offers you the opportunity to bring our education into your facility.  Contact us for more information by calling 08 8362 7902 or emailing [email protected]

Q: Do you offer a certification?

Our program, like those of the other leaders in the Pilates industry, offers an assessment-based certificate of completion. This is not a Certificate IV or Diploma course, it is however recognized worldwide.

Q: Do I have to take all of my courses at the same location?

We recommend that you complete your training with us at Stomping Ground Studios.  However, if you have to move interstate or overseas we can certainly point you in the direction of other Balanced Body Authorised Training Centres to complete your training if necessary.

Q: Is there a final test out?

To complete your program of choice there is a test out which consists of a practical and a written examination. Depending on the course of study, the practical examination requires each student to demonstrate competence in class design, appropriateness of exercise choices, exercise progressions and regressions as well as equipment set up, safety and appropriateness. The written examination consists of multiple choice, fill in the blank and essays. Get more information on exams, content and expectations.

Q: Do you offer payment options?

Yes. Once you decide to commit to one of the Pilates Instructor Programs you have the option to pay up front for the whole program or we can set up a payment plan for you.  Payment for both options is due 14 days prior to the start date of the program or module.

My daughter loves Stomping Ground Studios so much that she is doing two classes a week. She says "it is the best studio in Adelaide. I love Stomping Ground Studios because the teachers are nice and we learn really cool moves."

Martin S.

The Equipment Pilates classes here completely changed my life as in the past I had chronic shoulder pain and headaches and my life quality was low and I relied on Ibuprofen a lot. The instructor here is incredible at working with you, your body and injuries to build strength where it is needed, without flaring up pain. Could not recommend enough!
